The maiden edition of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association Relay (GCU Relays 2018) will hold on Saturday 17th November 2018 at the Ultra-modern tartan tracks of the school in Ughelli constructed by NNPC/Shell Petroleum Development Company.
The GCU Relays 2018 is to rekindle the spirit of Sports in Secondary school and enhancement of school sports, social interaction for unity and Progress.
The National Executive Council of GCUOBA after carrying out due diligence, identified GCU relays as a vehicle to promote social integration through strategic development of athletics and the restoration of healthy sports rivalry among secondary schools nationwide as it was in the old days.
“We were cultured with the philosophy of a sound mind in a sound body as physical exercise was and is still inseparable from healthy living. Second, to academics, sports occupied a pride of place in the lives o students in our time as it was mandatory for all Government College Ughelli (GCU) Students to participate in one form of sport or the other. There were three major sports and a distinct sporting season was attached to each of them in the GCU sports calendar, So, we had Athletics season, Football Season and Cricket season!” Roy Odoko said.
The inaugural GCU relays will feature 100m, 200m, 4 x 100m relays and 4 x 400m relays for both boys and girls. A maximum of fifteen athletes shall represent each college and 20 schools altogether have been invited for the 2018 edition.
Some of the invited schools are: Kings College Lagos, St. Gregory’s College Obalende Lagos, Igbobi College Yaba Lagos, Government College Ibadan, Edo College Benin-City, Western Boys High School Benin City, Federal Government College Warri, Hussey College Warri, Urhobo College Effurun, St. Patrick’s College Asaba, Orogun Grammar School Orogun, Government College Umuahia, Queens College Lagos, Idia College Benin City, Baptist Girls School Agbor, Oharisi College Afisere-Ughelli, Anglican Girls Grammar School Ughelli, St. Theresa’s College Ughelli, James Welch Grammar School Emevor and Anglican Girls Grammar School Asaba.
The three days event which has Friday 16th as it arrival day, Saturday 17th as event proper and Sunday 18th November as departure day.
All the 300 participating athletes shall be accommodated and given free meals throughout the duration of the competition. Consistent with the rules and regulations of GCU Relays, participating athletes are expected to be of the best behaviour as role models of their schools.
The Secretary-General of Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association Mr Roy Odoko said the mission of the Association through the GCU Relays would help to progressively build and cement healthy interaction between secondary schools and students from all the different states of the Federation for the unity and progress of Nigeria.
