Nigeria’s women national basketball team, D’Tigress on Saturday lost their opening Group B game 86 – 68 points against world number four ranked team, Australia at the FIBA Women World Cup holding in Spain.
The African champions won only one quarter in the encounter after they reduced points difference from 15 points in the second quarter to a 7 points margin in the third quarter to earn a 21-23 third quarter win while they trailed 24-17 in Q1, 18-14 in Q2 and 23 – 14 in Q4.
The veteran center, Aisha Mohammed had an impressive game with a +6 efficiency rating and earned 8 points and two assists in the game.
D’Tigress showed defensive solidity in the game making 42 (19 offensive and 23 defensives) rebounds in the game but it was the offense in the form of 33% field goal percentage where they made 21 of 71 attempts from the paint and arc that led the team down.
Australian center, Liz Cambage who has a Nigerian father led all scorers in the game with 34 points and an efficiency rating of 38% while Evelyn Akhator led all Nigerian scorers with 21 points.
The coach Otis Hughley side will next play against Turkey in the second group game of the FIBA Women’s World Cup on Sunday.
In another game also decided today, Latvia lost against China 61 – 64 in the opening Group D duel.
