Evelyn Akhator and the D’Tigress team led the celebrations of the achievements recorded by Nigeria Basketball on Friday at the Nigerian Sports Awards ceremony held at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos.
Basketball had nominations in 5 categories and won 2 on the night set aside to recognize individuals and federations who had excelled in 2017.
President of the Nigeria basketball Federation represented by North West representative on the NBBF board, Suraj Yusuf was on the ground to receive the Team of the year award won by the D’Tigress who went 8 games unbeaten to clinch the 2017 FIBA Africa women’s championship in Mali.
The team defeated their male counterparts, D’Tigers who clinched the silver medal at the 2017 Afrobasket for men in Tunisia and Plateau United who won the 2017 Nigeria Professional Football League.
WNBA star, Evelyn Akhator was voted the Ball person of the year for 2017 ahead of ping pong sensation and Nigeria number 1, Aruna Quadri and D’Tigers captain, Ike Diogu.
Meanwhile, Akhator who is on the books of Dallas Wings was narrowly beaten to the Sportswoman of the year by former Arsenal Ladies striker, Assisat Oshoala while wrestling coach, Purity Akuh pipped D’Tigress handler, Sam Vincent to the coach of the year award.
Diogu once again lost narrowly to Aruna Quadri in the Sportsman of the year category.
Reacting after the award, Suraj described the feat as incredible which has rewarded the efforts of the new board in repositioning basketball and making it viable for investors.
“The award did not only confirm our efforts and achievements in the last 3 to 4 months since we took over. It has also shown that Nigerians are also watching with keen interest and taking note of what we are trying to achieve as a board.
“We are being encouraged by all these accolades from the Federal Government, corporate Nigerians, and individuals to do more.”
