The Senior Secondary School 2 Bob set a record of 10:41 minutes at the maiden edition of the Government College Ughelli Relays 2018.
Delta born 15 year old sprint sensation Brume is from Afiesere Secondary School, Afiesere Ughelli Delta State. He is SS 2 and from a family where track and field is runs in the family. The mother of the record older was also an athletes in her own days in school and which the son took after.
He won three gold medals for his school at the maiden edition of the GCU Relays 2018 which just concluded on Saturday 17th of November 2018 in the pemises of the school on the Newly built Tartan track by Shell Nieria as their CSR for the School.
Government College Ughelli with several history in track and field has several sporting facilities like Three (3) Football Pitch, One (1) Cricket pitch, One (1) Lawn Tennis Court,Two (2) Basketball Court, One (1) Olympic size Swimming Pool and a Modern Tartan Track donated to the school by the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC).
The newly re-awaken Relays was an initiative of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys Association (GCUOBA) with several sets of past students in attendance right from the Set of student since when it was established.
The President General Worldwide Professor Oritsegbemi O. Omatete was physical to see thing for himself at the maiden edition of the GCU Relays. He said in his speech that the GCU Relays is similar to the famous “Penn Relays” in Philadelphia in the USA.
The GCU Relays which was keen on identifying new stars in the making as the annual edition will provide avenue in selecting and developing prospective sprinters to represent our reat country Nigeria.
The President General Worldwide in his speech also re-interated that the sprint was a tradition in Nigeria as he reminded Nigerians way back to the Olympics games. In 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Nigeria won Bronze medal in men’s 4 x 400m Relay; in 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Nigeria won Silver medal in men’s 4 x 100m Relay, Bronze medal in women’s 4 x 100m Relay; In 1996 Atlanta Olympics, Nigeria won Silver medal in women’s 4 x 400m Relay,Bronze medals in Women’s 200m and 400m; In 2000 Sydney Olympics, Nigeria won gold Medal in men’s 4 x 400m Relays, Silver medals in women’s 100m hurdles; In 2004 Athens Olympics, Nigeria won Bronze medals in men’s 4 x 100m Relay and 4 x 400m Relay; and in 2008 Beijing Olympics, Nigeria won Silver medal in women’s 4 x 100m Relay.
The GCU Relays will provide super stars that will want to make a fortune out of sport with the Old Boys (GCUOBA) ready to help with the competition amongst young stars across the country.
